Notes from past editors of Rowntrees of Riseborough
"The sources from which the information in this book has been worked out are too numerous to mention in full, but they include parish registers, Quaker registers at Friend's House, London, records of Wills at Somerset House, old letters written by Rowntrees of past generations. (Four examples of these are quoted, viz., two letters and two wills.)
It would not have been possible to produce the book without the ready co-operation of many members of the Rowntree family. For the information about our earlier ancestors we are largely indebted to Allan Rowntree of Westwood, Scarborough."

"My Uncle Charles Brightwen Rowntree BA (1873-1955), was Headmaster of the Quaker School in Saffron Walden, Essex from 1922 to 1934. He was also author of Saffron Walden: Then and Now (1951). He first compiled Rowntrees of Riseborough genealogy in 1940, since when I have endeavoured to update it twice, in 1979 and 1982 with typed manuscript additions.
Now the Sessions Book trust has undertaken to publish a further printed edition which makes about twice the number of pages of my Uncle's original one and requires the addition of a PART THREE to each of the six families recorded. Reference to the genealogy shows these six sections, each of which bears its section number at the foot of the page and the page number of the whole book at the top.
Genealogies always increase: further information will always be welcome as long as it is accurate. I apologise here for any mistaken dates or names but I am dependant on the information sent to me, which sometimes differs from different sources."
